A single candlestick is composed of four prices: open, close, high, and low. If the closing price is higher than the opening price, the real body is bullish (usually red or green), indicating buyer dominance. Conversely, it is a bearish candlestick (usually blue or red). The upper shadow (wick) represents the price difference between the high and the top of the real body, while the lower shadow represents the difference between the low and the bottom of the real body. In our query tool, simply enter a Hong Kong stock code (e.g., 00700) and select a timeframe (Daily, Weekly, or Monthly), and the page will automatically plot the corresponding candlestick chart.
The tool overlays two moving averages (MA5 and MA20) by default. The calculation formula is as follows:
The MA5 reflects short-term trends, while the MA20 represents medium-term trends. When the MA5 crosses above the MA20 to form a "golden cross," it is often a buy signal; when it crosses below to form a "death cross," it indicates selling risk. This intuition comes from the smoothing effect in statistics: short-term moving averages are more sensitive to price changes, while long-term moving averages are more stable. The crossover point confirms a trend reversal.
Let's look at a specific example together. Open the "HK Stock Candlestick Chart" tool above:
The page will now generate a candlestick chart. Hover your mouse over the last candlestick (e.g., 2025-04-07), and a popup will display: Open 380.00, High 385.00, Low 378.50, Close 383.50. Since the closing price is higher than the opening price, it is a bullish candlestick. The real body length is about 3.5 HKD, the upper shadow is 1.5 HKD, and the lower shadow is 1.5 HKD, indicating that the bulls have a slight advantage. Meanwhile, the MA5 (370.2) is above the MA20 (368.1), forming a golden cross and suggesting a strong short-term trend.
Change the "Timeframe" from the previous step to Weekly and take another look. For the same stock and market, the weekly candlestick compresses the time scale. If the latest week's closing price is 383.50 and the opening price is 375.00, the bullish real body is larger, but the weekly MA5 (not shown) might still be suppressed by the MA20. This tells us that a daily golden cross might just be a short-term rebound; if the weekly chart still shows a death cross, the medium-term downward pressure has not been relieved. Comparing two timeframes helps you avoid being misled by a single timeframe.
| Candlestick Pattern / Indicator Signal | Meaning and Suggestion |
|---|---|
| Consecutive bullish candlesticks + MA5 > MA20 (Golden Cross) | Short-term uptrend confirmed; watch for buying opportunities. |
| Long upper shadow + Shrinking volume | Significant overhead selling pressure; potential top, be cautious about chasing highs. |
| Long lower shadow + Heavy volume | Strong underlying support; potential rebound. |
| MA5 < MA20 (Death Cross) + Consecutive bearish candlesticks | Medium-term downtrend; consider reducing positions or staying on the sidelines. |
| Narrow sideways consolidation (Short real bodies, short shadows) | Balance between bulls and bears; wait for a directional breakout. |
Note: No single indicator should be used as the sole basis for decision-making. Comprehensive analysis should incorporate trading volume, broader market conditions, and fundamentals.
The Hong Kong Stock Exchange typically provides data for the past 5 years, but free APIs may only allow fetching the past year. Our tool loads the past year by default. You can select "Custom" in the "Time Range" to extend the query period.
Currently, we display two fixed moving averages, but future versions will allow parameter adjustments. If you need other periods, you can calculate them manually: simply replace N in the MA formula with your desired number.
Yes, a bullish candlestick means the closing price is higher than the opening price, representing an overall price increase for the day. However, note that if the opening price is significantly lower than the previous day's close, even a bullish candlestick might not recover to the previous close. Therefore, you still need to compare the current day's close with the previous day's close to determine the actual gain or loss.
A line chart only connects the closing prices of each period, ignoring the details of highs, lows, and opens. A candlestick chart retains all four prices, providing a more authentic reflection of the battle between bulls and bears. Under the market-maker mechanism of HK stocks, candlestick charts offer more reference value than line charts.
These are called Marubozu or shaven head/bottom candlesticks: no upper shadow means the high equals the top of the real body (either the close or open), and similarly for no lower shadow. This indicates complete control by either buyers or sellers and is a strong trend signal.
During a trading suspension, our data source provides the last traded price before the suspension, causing the candlestick chart to display a flat horizontal line. Please do not treat this as a valid current price and pay attention to company announcements.
