The core formula for calculating Hong Kong stock investment returns is:
Return Rate = ( (Sell Price - Buy Price) × Shares × Exchange Rate ) / (Buy Price × Shares × Exchange Rate) × 100%
Where:
• Buy Price / Sell Price: Price per share in HKD
• Shares: Number of shares traded
• Exchange Rate: The mid-point exchange rate of HKD to RMB (or other local currency)
This formula scales the price difference to the total amount and converts it into your local currency, directly reflecting the actual profit or loss percentage of a Hong Kong stock trade. Note: This does not include transaction taxes and fees.
Open the "Hong Kong Stock Real-Time Quotes" tool above and find Tencent Holdings (00700) in the quote list. Suppose we want to calculate the return on a trade:
• Enter 50 in the "Buy Price" input box
• Enter 55 in the "Sell Price" input box
• Enter 1000 in the "Shares" input box
• Enter 0.92 (HKD to RMB) in the "Exchange Rate" input box
• Click the "Calculate Return" button
The result card on the right will display:
• Return Amount: 4,600 Yuan (RMB)
• Return Rate: 10%
Interpretation: The return rate for this short-term holding is 10%, which means the stock price increased by 10%. Since the exchange rate remained stable, you earned a 10% return.
Using Tencent Holdings again, with a buy price of 50 HKD, a sell price of 55 HKD, and 1,000 shares. If the exchange rate rises from 0.92 to 0.95 (RMB appreciates), enter 0.95 in the "Exchange Rate" box and click calculate:
• Return Amount: 4,750 Yuan (RMB)
• Return Rate: 10%
Notice that the return rate remains unchanged (because the exchange rate affects both the numerator and denominator simultaneously), but the return amount increases. Conversely, if the exchange rate drops to 0.88 (RMB depreciates), the return amount decreases to 4,400 Yuan, while the return rate stays at 10%. This example illustrates that the exchange rate only affects the absolute amount, not the percentage return rate—provided the buy-sell price spread remains constant. However, if you use RMB to buy Hong Kong stocks directly (via Stock Connect), the exchange rate impact is more complex.
• Return Rate > 0: The trade is profitable; a higher value indicates better profit.
• Return Rate = 0: Break-even; after deducting taxes and fees, it is an actual loss.
• Return Rate < 0: Loss; the absolute value represents the extent of the loss.
It is recommended to annualize the return based on the holding period: a 10% return held for 1 month yields a substantial annualized return, whereas holding it for 1 year is just average.
1. Confusing HKD and RMB: When entering the exchange rate, note that it is how much RMB 1 HKD equals. Do not reverse it, or the results will be vastly skewed.
2. Ignoring transaction fees: The tool's results do not account for commissions, stamp duties, transfer fees, etc. The actual return rate should be reduced by 1-2% from this baseline.
3. Using the current real-time price instead of the execution price: Make sure to use your actual buy/sell prices for calculations, not the current market quotes.
4. Using the closing exchange rate instead of the settlement date rate: Stock Connect funds are actually exchanged at the rate two business days later. For short-term trading, pay attention to the timing of the exchange rate.
Q: Does a 10% return rate mean I made a 10% profit?
A: Yes, it is the percentage return calculated based on the buy and sell prices you entered. However, it does not include transaction costs; after deductions, you might only net 8-9%.
Q: Why does the return rate stay the same while the amount changes?
A: Because the exchange rate appears as a multiplier in both the numerator and denominator of the formula and cancels out. Therefore, the percentage return rate is independent of the exchange rate, but the absolute amount is affected by it.
Q: Can this tool calculate dividends?
A: Currently, it only supports price spread returns and does not include dividends. You can manually add dividends to the cash inflow corresponding to the "Sell Price".
Q: Is there a difference between Stock Connect and direct Hong Kong stock trading?
A: Stock Connect trading involves additional currency exchange costs and trading day restrictions. This tool can serve as a simplified reference, but using a specialized Stock Connect calculator is recommended.
Q: A negative return rate indicates a loss, so should I sell?
A: The tool only displays the results of historical or hypothetical trades and does not constitute trading advice. Decisions should be made based on company fundamentals, market trends, etc.
