To understand short-term fluctuations or long-term trends in trading, candlestick charts are the most intuitive language. Originating in the 18th-century Japanese rice market, candlesticks were introduced to the West by Steve Nison in the 1990s. Each candlestick contains four prices: Open, High, Low, and Close (OHLC). A bullish candle (Close > Open) indicates buyers are in control, while a bearish candle indicates the opposite. Our tool aggregates real-time candlestick data for global futures from exchange data sources, helping you review market trends in minutes.
Candlesticks themselves do not involve complex formulas, but the price change percentage is calculated as:
Price Change (%) = (Current Close − Previous Close) / Previous Close × 100%
The relationship between the four prices forms the real body and the shadows (wicks). Body Length = |Close − Open|, Upper Shadow = High − max(Open, Close), Lower Shadow = min(Open, Close) − Low. These numbers are plotted as bars, allowing you to see the balance of power between bulls and bears at a glance. In our tool, every candlestick is calculated in real-time by the backend, and every bar you see on the chart undergoes strict data validation.
Open the "Global Futures Candlestick Chart" tool above, and you will see three main areas:
CL, Gold GC, or Hang Seng Index HSI. Note that it is case-insensitive.Let's take WTI Crude Oil futures (CL) as an example. Open the tool:
Interpretation: The daily close is higher than the open, the real body is small, and the upper shadow is slightly long. This indicates that bulls attempted to push the price higher but met resistance. If this pattern appears consecutively, it may signal short-term consolidation.
Comparison Example 1: Weekly vs. Daily Candlesticks
Still using Crude Oil CL, switch the timeframe to "Weekly". You will see that each candlestick represents a week's price action, smoothing out volatility and making the trend clearer. For instance, if a week opens at 66.50 and closes at 70.20 with a +5.6% gain, forming a large bullish candle, it indicates strength on the weekly level. The daily chart might show pullbacks during this period, but the weekly chart filters out short-term noise.
Comparison Example 2: Gold GC Daily Candlestick After NFP Release
Enter GC and select the Daily timeframe. Adjust the date range to the release of the latest Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP) report (e.g., 2025-04-04). The candlestick shows an Open of 2035 and a Close of 2010, a -1.23% drop. It forms a bearish candle with a long lower shadow (Low of 2005), indicating that better-than-expected data pressured gold prices, but low-level buying provided support.
Candlestick patterns can help gauge market sentiment based on the following characteristics:
| Pattern Characteristic | Common Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Bullish body > 2x previous day's body | Strong bullish momentum, potential acceleration |
| Bearish body > 2x previous day's body | Heavy bearish pressure, note the risk |
| Upper shadow > 2x body length | Rally rejected, obvious resistance |
| Lower shadow > 2x body length | Dip bought, effective support |
| Doji (Open ≈ Close) | Indecision, potential reversal signal |
Note: A single candlestick provides a relatively weak signal and should be combined with trend analysis and trading volume. Our tool displays volume bars by default to assist with confirmation.
