One contract of WTI Crude Oil futures (1,000 barrels) is currently quoted at $75.30/barrel. When the price fluctuates by $0.01, the profit and loss (P&L) changes by $10 (1,000 × 0.01). Open our "Global Futures Quotes" tool above, and you will see a symbol dropdown, buy price input, sell price input, and lot size input. The tool displays the tick value, P&L amount, and margin reference in real time below.
The core formula for futures P&L is:
P&L = Lot Size × Contract Multiplier × (Sell Price − Buy Price)
Variable definitions:
• Lot Size: The number of contracts. One lot corresponds to a fixed contract multiplier.
• Contract Multiplier: The amount of the underlying asset represented by each contract. For example, WTI Crude Oil is 1,000 barrels, and COMEX Gold is 100 ounces.
• Sell Price and Buy Price: The respective prices when opening and closing a position (when going long, Sell Price > Buy Price results in a profit; the opposite applies when going short).
Financial intuition: Futures trading is essentially a leveraged price spread game. In the formula, the Lot Size × Contract Multiplier magnifies the impact of price changes. This is why small fluctuations can lead to large profits or losses—which also means high risk.
Let's take trading COMEX Gold as an example (contract multiplier of 100 ounces).
• Select "Gold" from the symbol dropdown;
• Enter 1980.50 in the "Buy Price" box (opening price);
• Enter 2000.50 in the "Sell Price" box (closing price);
• Enter 2 in the "Lot Size" box;
• The "P&L" card on the right side of the calculator will now display $4,000, and the "Tick Value" below will show $10/tick (Wait, 2 lots × 100 oz × $0.01 = $20? Actually, tick value follows specific rules: Gold's minimum tick size is $0.10/oz, so tick value = Lot Size × Contract Multiplier × $0.10. For simplicity, our tool calculates and displays this automatically).
Interpretation: Going long on 2 lots of gold at 1980.50, when the price rises to 2000.50 (an increase of $20/oz), the profit is 2 × 100 × (2000.50 − 1980.50) = $4,000. After deducting commissions and slippage, the actual net profit will be slightly less, but this tool only reflects theoretical P&L.
Example 1: Shorting and Losing
Suppose you short 1 lot of WTI Crude Oil (contract multiplier 1,000 barrels) with an opening price of 76.00 and a closing price of 77.50. Enter the following in the tool:
• Select "WTI Crude Oil" as the symbol;
• Enter 77.50 for the Buy Price (closing buy price) and 76.00 for the Sell Price (opening sell price);
• Enter 1 for the Lot Size;
• The P&L result displays −$1,500 (1 × 1,000 × (76.00 − 77.50) = −1,500).
Interpretation: Even if the price only fluctuates by $1.50, being on the wrong side of a short trade will result in a loss. This result warns traders to use stop-losses.
Example 2: Comparing Different Contract Multipliers
For the same fluctuation of 10 minimum ticks (assuming a minimum tick size of $0.01):
• E-mini S&P 500 (contract multiplier $50) → 50 × 0.01 × Lot Size;
• Micro E-mini S&P 500 (contract multiplier $5) → 5 × 0.01 × Lot Size.
By selecting different symbols in the tool and observing the differences in tick value, you can intuitively understand leverage ratios.

Results are based on hypothetical prices and manual parameters entered by the user. For actual trading, please rely on data from your broker's platform. Global futures involve leverage risk and the potential loss of your entire principal. Before using, ensure you understand the contract rules and your own risk tolerance. You can now select a symbol, enter the price and lot size in the tool above, and view your real-time P&L.
