Diabetes meal planning is essentially about matching the energy you eat with the energy your body uses, while balancing carbohydrates, protein, and fat to help prevent major blood sugar swings. This calculator uses the internationally recognized Mifflin-St Jeor equation to estimate your basal metabolic rate (BMR)—the calories your body burns at complete rest:
Your BMR is then multiplied by your selected activity factor to estimate total daily energy expenditure (TDEE):
Total calories = BMR × activity factor. The calories are then allocated using commonly recommended diabetes medical nutrition therapy ranges: 50%–55% carbohydrate, 15%–20% protein, and 25%–30% fat. By default, this calculator uses 50% carbohydrate, 20% protein, and 30% fat, then splits calories across three meals at 30%, 40%, and 30% so your daily plan is easy to follow.

Main example: Ms. Zhang’s daily plan
Ms. Zhang is 50, retired, 160 cm tall, weighs 70 kg, and selects “Light activity.”
Step 1: BMR = 10×70 + 6.25×160 - 5×50 - 161 = 700 + 1000 - 250 - 161 = 1,289 kcal.
Step 2: Total calories = 1,289 × 1.3 ≈ 1,676 kcal, rounded by the calculator to 1,700 kcal.
Step 3: Macronutrient targets: carbohydrate 1,700×50%÷4 = 212.5 g, protein 1,700×20%÷4 = 85 g, fat 1,700×30%÷9 ≈ 56.7 g.
Step 4: Meal split: breakfast 510 kcal (about 30%), with around 60 g of carbohydrate—for example, a small bowl of multigrain porridge and an egg; lunch 680 kcal (40%), with around 80 g of carbohydrate plus fish or lean meat and vegetables; dinner 510 kcal (30%), with around 60 g of carbohydrate and a lighter, lower-oil meal. The result card lists these targets clearly for easy meal planning.
Comparison example: Mr. Li’s construction-site meals
Mr. Li is a 40-year-old construction worker, 175 cm tall, weighs 85 kg, and selects “Heavy activity.”
BMR = 10×85 + 6.25×175 - 5×40 + 5 = 850 + 1093.75 - 200 + 5 = 1,748.75 kcal.
Total calories = 1,748.75 × 1.9 ≈ 3,323 kcal, displayed by the calculator as 3,300 kcal.
Carbohydrate = 3,300×50%÷4 = 412.5 g, protein = 3,300×20%÷4 = 165 g, fat = 3,300×30%÷9 ≈ 110 g.
With the same macronutrient ratio but much higher activity, Mr. Li needs nearly twice Ms. Zhang’s daily carbohydrate intake, along with significantly more protein and fat. This shows why meal plans need to be individualized.
Your total calorie result estimates the intake needed to maintain your current weight. If you are overweight, reducing this by 200–300 kcal per day may support gradual weight loss; if you are underweight, you may need an additional 200–300 kcal. Your carbohydrate target includes staple foods and foods containing sugar, so distribute foods such as rice, bread, potatoes, and other starches across meals accordingly. Protein comes from fish, poultry, eggs, lean meat, and soy foods. Fat includes cooking oil, nuts, fatty meats, dressings, and other sources. As a simple guide:

Q: Can people with diabetes eat fruit?
Yes. The carbohydrates in fruit count toward your total carbohydrate target. Consider eating fruit between meals and keeping each serving to no more than 100 g. Lower-glycemic options such as apples, pears, and strawberries are often good choices. For example, a medium apple contains about 20 g of carbohydrate, so account for it by reducing carbohydrates from another food source.
Q: How much meat equals the protein target in the calculator?
Protein grams are not the same as the weight of meat. For example, 100 g of lean pork contains about 20 g of protein, 100 g of chicken breast about 24 g, and 100 g of firm tofu about 8 g. Use the calculator’s protein target to combine foods throughout the day. An 85 g protein target might include one egg at breakfast (7 g), 100 g lean meat at lunch (20 g), 75 g fish at dinner (18 g), plus protein from grains and soy foods.
Q: Why is my calorie result lower than I expected?
You may have selected an activity factor that is too low, or your body weight may be relatively low. First, check that your activity level is accurate. Basal metabolic rate also naturally declines with age, especially after age 50, so a lower calorie need can be normal.
Q: Is this calculator suitable for type 1 diabetes?
Type 1 diabetes uses similar nutrition principles, but carbohydrate intake needs to be matched more precisely with insulin dosing, and protein and fat can also affect blood glucose. This calculator is primarily intended for adults with type 2 diabetes. People with type 1 diabetes may use the carbohydrate estimate as a reference only and should follow their clinician’s guidance.
Q: Can pregnant people or children use it?
No. Pregnancy has unique energy and nutrient requirements that this calculator does not account for. Children with diabetes need plans based on growth and development and should not use this tool.
This calculator uses the standard Mifflin-St Jeor equation and general macronutrient ratios. It is intended for adults aged 18–65 with type 2 diabetes and no serious complications. It provides a starting estimate for weight maintenance; adjust intake for weight loss or gain under medical guidance. Results are not appropriate for gestational diabetes, type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe liver or kidney impairment, cancer cachexia, or perioperative nutrition support.
