Installment savings is a type of time deposit offered by banks. You deposit a fixed amount each month, then withdraw all of your principal and interest in one lump sum when the term ends. Think of it as a disciplined savings plan—ideal for salaried workers, students, or anyone saving steadily toward a goal. Common terms are 1, 3, and 5 years. The rate is usually the bank's posted installment-savings rate on the day you open the account and remains fixed for the full term. This calculator quickly estimates how much you will receive at maturity for different terms and monthly deposit amounts, helping you compare bank rates and plan how much to save each month.
Interest on an installment savings deposit is calculated as follows:
Interest = Monthly deposit × Cumulative monthly balance factor × Monthly interest rate
Where:
Total at maturity = Monthly deposit × Number of deposits + Interest
Why does this formula work? Your first deposit earns interest for the longest period—N months—while your final deposit earns interest for only one month. Adding the interest from each deposit gives monthly deposit × monthly rate × (1+2+…+N). The sum of this arithmetic series is the cumulative monthly balance factor above. This is a straightforward, accurate method that banks commonly use for this type of deposit.

Mr. Wang sets aside ¥2,000 from his salary each month in a 3-year installment savings deposit. The bank offers an annual interest rate of 1.5%. Here is the calculation:
Enter 2000 for “Monthly Deposit”, 3 for “Deposit Term”, and 1.5 for “Annual Interest Rate”, then click Calculate. You will see a total at maturity of ¥73,665, total interest of ¥1,665, and total principal deposited of ¥72,000. In other words, Mr. Wang can withdraw ¥73,665 after 3 years, including ¥1,665 in interest.
Scenario 1: Save a Small Amount for 5 Years
Li can save only ¥500 per month and chooses a 5-year term at 1.8% annual interest. The number of deposits is 60, the cumulative monthly balance factor is (60+1)×60÷2=1830, and the monthly rate is 0.15%. Interest is 500×1830×0.15%=¥1,372.5, and the total at maturity is 30,000+1,372.5=¥31,372.5. Enter 500, 5, and 1.8 in the calculator to see the same result. Even a modest monthly amount can grow into meaningful savings over five years.
Scenario 2: Very Low Interest Rate
If the bank cuts its rate to 0.5%, saving ¥2,000 per month for 3 years would earn 2000×666×0.04167%≈¥555 in interest, for a total of about ¥72,555. “Total at Maturity” is the total amount you can withdraw from the bank when the deposit ends. “Total Interest” is the return paid by the bank, while “Total Principal Deposited” is the money you contributed yourself.

You can also estimate the average annual simple-interest return with “Total Interest ÷ Principal ÷ Term in Years” and compare it with the annual rate you entered. If the result is substantially different, check whether you entered a monthly rate in the annual-rate field.
Which earns more interest: installment savings or a lump-sum time deposit?
At the same bank and for the same term, lump-sum time deposits usually offer higher rates than installment savings because the bank receives all of the funds upfront. Installment-savings rates are commonly around 60%–80% of comparable lump-sum time-deposit rates, depending on the bank's posted rates.
Will this calculator match the interest paid by my bank?
This calculator uses the standard formula and will match most bank-counter or online-banking estimates. However, banks may use cumulative-balance methods and round to the nearest cent, so the final amount can differ slightly—often by ¥0.01. Your bank's posted result is authoritative.
What happens if I miss a deposit?
Many banks allow you to make up one missed monthly deposit in the following month without affecting interest. If you miss more than two consecutive deposits, some banks may apply demand-deposit interest to subsequent funds. This can reduce your final return, and the calculator cannot model these account-specific breach rules. Make deposits on time whenever possible.
Does an installment savings deposit renew automatically at maturity?
Most banks do not automatically renew installment savings deposits. At maturity, you need to withdraw the funds or open a new deposit. Otherwise, the money may roll into a demand account at a very low rate, so keep track of the maturity date.
Can I use this calculator for education savings?
Education savings is also a form of installment savings, but it may offer preferential rates, a total deposit cap, and tax benefits. If its interest rules are the same as a standard installment savings deposit, this calculator provides a useful estimate. For specific rates and policies, check with your bank.
