Code Structure & Naming Rules

A U.S. stock ticker symbol is a letter abbreviation assigned by American stock exchanges to each stock, with a maximum of 4 letters. NYSE codes are typically 1-3 letters (such as JPM, BAC), while NASDAQ codes are usually 4 letters (such as AAPL, MSFT). The codes themselves have no standard meaning, but some follow patterns: Class A shares use the .A suffix, preferred shares use the .PR suffix, etc. Our tool connects to SEC EDGAR and real-time exchange data—simply enter the company's full name or abbreviation to get the corresponding code.

1. Confusing ticker codes with CUSIP numbers—CUSIP is a 9-digit identifier, while a code is a letter abbreviation.
