When a US stock drops from $180 to $170, printing three consecutive bearish candles, and on the fourth day forms a doji with a long lower shadow—this is a potential trend reversal signal. Let's see how to confirm this using our tool.
Candlestick charts originated in the 18th-century Japanese rice market. Each candle records the open, close, high, and low prices. The real body represents the price difference between the open and close, while the shadows (wicks) indicate the daily trading range. Our tool's candlestick chart defaults to white bullish candles (close > open) and black bearish candles (close < open), which you can change to a red/green color scheme in the settings.
In technical analysis, single candlestick patterns (like hammers and engulfing patterns) and multiple candle combinations (like three black crows and rising three methods) are often used to gauge short-term sentiment and potential turning points. The candlestick charting feature provided by our tool allows you to quickly browse the historical daily charts of any US stock and freely overlay technical indicators.
Taking the most commonly used Simple Moving Average (SMA) as an example, the formula is:
SMAn = (P1 + P2 + … + Pn) / n
Where n is the number of periods (e.g., 20 days), and P is the daily closing price. Moving averages smooth out price fluctuations to help identify trend direction: price above the moving average → bullish trend, below → bearish trend. This logic is based on the idea that 'the average historical price can serve as a reference anchor for current value'—when the price deviates far from the moving average, the probability of mean reversion increases.
This tool displays 5-day, 20-day, and 60-day moving averages by default. You can add or modify periods in the 'Indicator Settings' on the right.
Let's look at an example together: looking for a 'Golden Cross' buy signal on the Apple (AAPL) daily candlestick chart.
Interpretation: This golden cross signal, combined with heavy volume, is a relatively strong short-term bullish signal. However, note that golden crosses often fail in sideways, choppy markets. You should observe whether the price can stabilize above the 20-day moving average moving forward.

Control Example: Death Cross Counterexample
Still using AAPL, let's switch the timeframe to March 2025. At that time, the 5-day moving average (172.50) crossed below the 20-day moving average (174.80), forming a death cross. Volume subsequently shrank for 3 consecutive days (20% below average), and the price dropped from 170 to 162. A death cross + shrinking volume usually warns of weakening downside momentum, and the stock may subsequently enter consolidation or rebound. In this example, the price found support around 162 and traded sideways for two weeks before picking a direction. This tells us: a single death cross signal needs to be evaluated comprehensively alongside volume and other indicators (like whether RSI is oversold); you shouldn't short based on a death cross alone.
| Observation Indicator | Signal Meaning | Reference Strength |
|---|---|---|
| Single long bullish candle (real body > 3%) | Strong buying pressure, short-term bullish | Medium, needs confirmation of a gap up the next day |
| Three consecutive bearish candles (Three Black Crows) | Top reversal, bearish | Stronger, more reliable if it simultaneously breaks below the 20-day moving average |
| Moving average golden cross (fast line crosses above slow line) | Bullish momentum starting to dominate | Medium, strong if combined with increased volume |
| Moving average death cross | Bearish dominance | Medium, observe if accompanied by heavy volume selling |
| RSI > 70 | Overbought, pullback risk | Reference indicator, price may continue to surge (strong stocks can see RSI remain elevated/diverge) |
| RSI < 30 | Oversold, potential rebound | Reference indicator, may remain low in a one-sided bear market |
This tool is for educational, analytical, and supplementary research purposes only and does not constitute investment advice. Technical analysis inherently involves lag and subjectivity; different traders may interpret the same signal in opposite ways. For actual trading decisions, please combine fundamentals, risk management, tax compliance, and other factors, and consult a licensed professional.
Data is delayed by about 15 minutes and cannot be used for high-frequency trading. Candlestick pattern recognition is a manual visual judgment; the tool does not provide automatic pattern recognition. When a stock undergoes a split or major merger, historical charts may jump (though adjusted closing prices attempt to correct this).
