The US Stock Gainers & Losers Tracker is a tool that displays the daily price changes and trading activity of the US stock market in one place. It ranks thousands of US stocks from highest to lowest based on specific metrics (such as percentage gained, percentage lost, trading volume, or turnover rate), allowing you to see market capital flows in seconds. The "ranking" itself does not create data; rather, it processes real-time (or delayed) quotes pushed by exchanges using a unified formula. For example, if a stock is up 15% today, it means its current price has risen by 15% compared to yesterday's closing price. This tool helps you quickly spot stocks with extreme volatility, but keep in mind: rankings only reflect past performance and do not indicate future trends.
The ranking relies on the basic price change formula:
Price Change (%) = (Current Price - Yesterday's Closing Price) ÷ Yesterday's Closing Price × 100%
Here, "Yesterday's Closing Price" refers to the last traded price at 16:00 Eastern Time (or the official exchange closing price), and "Current Price" is the latest traded price pushed by the market data interface. Volume rankings simply sort by the cumulative number of shares traded that day. The financial intuition behind this formula is simple: percentage changes eliminate absolute price differences, making a 2% gain on a $100 stock comparable to a 2% gain on a $10 stock. Our tool retrieves the latest and previous closing prices for each stock from the data source, automatically calculating and sorting them. You just need to select the sorting metric and time range.
Open the "US Stock Gainers & Losers Tracker" above, and you will see a clean table with several filter controls:
1. In the "Sort By" dropdown menu in the top left corner, select your core metric: Top Gainers, Top Losers, Volume, or Turnover Rate. The default is "Top Gainers".
2. If you only want to view a specific sector or index components (like the S&P 500), select the corresponding market in the "Market Sector" dropdown.
3. The table updates automatically, displaying the top 50 by default. You can change this number in the "Items per page" input box, for example, to 100.
4. For a more specific search: enter a ticker symbol or company name (e.g., AAPL or Apple) in the top search box. The table will highlight matches and show the stock's current ranking.
5. Click on any stock ticker to open a popup (or new tab) showing its intraday chart and historical trends for further analysis.
Let's look at a specific example. Suppose it is currently 11:00 AM New York time on April 1, 2025, during regular trading hours:
• Select "Top Gainers" from the "Sort By" dropdown. The table immediately displays the list of stocks with the highest percentage gains for the day.
• You notice the #1 ranked Company XYZ is up +23.4%, with a previous close of $45.00 and a current price of $55.53 (verified by the formula: (55.53 - 45) / 45 = 23.4%).
• Now you want to check the volume ranking: switch the sorting metric to "Volume". The table resorts, and the first row becomes Company ABC with a trading volume of 128 million shares.
• Next, you want to look at the top losers among S&P 500 components: select "S&P 500" under "Market Sector", then choose "Top Losers" as the sorting metric. The table displays the worst-performing component stocks, such as a retail stock down -8.1%.
Interpretation: That -8.1% stock is experiencing a unilateral drop today. Combined with sector news (like weaker-than-expected retail sales data), this can signal short-term risk, but more technical and fundamental analysis is needed before making a trading decision.
Scenario Comparisons:
These comparisons help you understand the market microstructure behind the ranking numbers, rather than just looking at absolute values.
Different ranking ranges carry different meanings. Here is a common evaluation framework:
| Gain / Loss Range | General Meaning | Common Accompanying Phenomena |
|---|---|---|
| > +10% or < -10% | Extreme volatility, usually accompanied by company announcements, earnings reports, or sudden market events. | Surge in trading volume, widened bid-ask spreads, active high-frequency trading. |
| +5% ~ +10% or -5% ~ -10% | Strong directional movement, possibly reflecting industry trends or institutional capital inflow/outflow. | Daily charts often show price gaps; watch for subsequent gap fills. |
| +2% ~ +5% or -2% ~ -5% | Normal range. If these appear in the top 50, it indicates low overall market volatility. | Relatively stable volume; can be used to screen for relatively strong/weak stocks. |
| Within ±2% | Sideways consolidation. Stocks ranking high here are often low-priced (a few cents change causes a large percentage shift). | Best ignored, unless looking for special situations in penny stocks. |
Note: Rankings themselves do not provide buy or sell signals and should only be used as a quick scanning tool for market heat.
Q1: Can the US Stock Tracker show pre-market and after-hours data?
A1: By default, it only shows real-time rankings for regular trading hours (9:30 AM - 4:00 PM ET). If you need pre-market (4:00 AM - 9:30 AM) and after-hours (4:00 PM - 8:00 PM) rankings, you must select "Pre-Market" or "After-Hours" mode in the dropdown menu. This data is sourced from electronic trading networks (e.g., ECNs or aggregated market data).
Q2: Why are some stocks missing from the rankings?
A2: Our tool includes over 7,000 US stocks (including ETFs and ADRs). However, if a stock has no trades that day (flat price) or if the data source is missing, it will not appear in the rankings. You can locate it by searching for its ticker or name.
Q3: Should I buy the #1 stock on the top gainers list?
A3: This tool only provides ranking information and does not constitute investment advice. Ranking first usually means a major event or overheated market sentiment, making chasing the rally extremely risky. We recommend making independent decisions based on fundamentals, news, and your own risk tolerance.
Q4: Is the data real-time or delayed?
A4: On the free tier, data is delayed by 15 minutes. Paid subscribers get Level 1 real-time quotes. The status bar above the tool will clearly display a "Real-Time" or "Delayed" tag.
Q5: Which is more useful: volume rankings or top gainers rankings?
A5: Both have their uses. Volume rankings reflect where market liquidity is concentrated, usually in large-cap stocks. Top gainers rankings reflect price momentum and are highly speculative in the short term. It's best to look at both: a massive gain with tiny volume is often unsustainable, while a moderate gain with unusually high volume could signal a breakout.
Q6: Can I customize the sorting fields?
A6: We currently offer five default sorting fields: Top Gainers, Top Losers, Volume, Turnover Rate, and Dollar Volume. You can also manually sort by clicking any column header in the table (such as "Current Price" or "Prev Close") for more flexible viewing.
The US stock ranking data provided by this tool comes from official exchange data vendors, but has the following limitations:
Now you can try switching sorting metrics and entering stock tickers in the tracker above to feel the real-time pulse of the market.
