The Chinese Yuan (RMB) uses Fen as its smallest unit of account. All amounts are first converted to Fen internally, then displayed as Yuan, Jiao, and Fen.
A supermarket receipt might say "Change: 8 Jiao", but when balancing your books, you write it as 0.8 Yuan. Or perhaps your child is practicing math and asks how many Yuan and Jiao make up 126 Fen. We encounter RMB unit conversions every day, and it all comes down to one simple rule: 1 Yuan = 10 Jiao, 1 Jiao = 10 Fen, and 1 Yuan = 100 Fen. It operates on a base-10 decimal system, just as neat and predictable as meters, decimeters, and centimeters. This rule stems from the RMB's three-tier fractional currency system of "Yuan, Jiao, and Fen", which has been in use since the first series of the Renminbi was issued. As long as you know how many places to move the decimal point to the left or right, any conversion is a breeze.
