For example, the spot price of AU99.99 gold is 480 RMB per gram. The spot value of a precious metal = Unit Price × Weight. The unit prices referenced by our tool are sourced from the daily closing prices of the Shanghai Gold Exchange (SGE) for contracts like Au99.99 and Ag99.99, as well as the listed gold bar prices from major Chinese banks. When calculating the total value, the tool automatically identifies the reference quote for the selected metal and multiplies it by the weight you entered. For instance, if the quote for 1 gram of gold is 480 RMB, the value of 100 grams = 480 × 100 = 48,000 RMB.
Let's use gold as an example. Open the "China Precious Metal Price Calculator" above:
Interpreting the results: 48,000 RMB is the raw gold value based on the reference quote. In actual transactions, banks or jewelry stores will charge additional processing and handling fees (approximately 8 to 20 RMB/g), so the total cost of purchasing physical gold will be higher.
Select Silver (AG99.99) as the metal type and enter 1000 grams (1 kg) for the weight. If the reference quote is 6.50 RMB/g, the total value = 6.5 × 1000 = 6,500 RMB. Silver has a lower unit price but higher price volatility, making it suitable for smaller investments.
For the same gold type, enter weights of 10 (a 10g gold bar) and 1000 (a 1kg gold ingot). The total values will be 4,800 RMB and 480,000 RMB, respectively. While the unit price is the same, the total value differs significantly. Note that kilogram-level transactions usually require going through an SGE member, whereas individual over-the-counter purchases are typically capped at around 200 grams.
| Total Value vs. Reference Quote × Weight | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Equals Reference Quote × Weight | Raw gold value, excluding any fees |
| Greater than this value (e.g., jewelry store quotes) | Includes processing fees, brand premiums, and taxes |
| Less than this value (e.g., recycling quotes) | Deducts refining loss, recycler profit margins, etc. |
Decision Reference: If you want to invest in physical gold, you should monitor bank gold bar quotes (usually the reference price + around 10 RMB/g). If you are looking at paper gold or gold ETFs, the prices will be closer to the reference price. The total value only represents the pure gold value and should not be used as the actual transaction price.
Q1: How often are the tool's quotes updated?
Quotes are updated to the latest daily settlement price after the close of each trading day. We do not provide real-time intraday tick data. For second-by-second market quotes, please refer to the official SGE website or professional trading software.
Q2: Why are bank gold bar quotes higher than the tool's reference price?
Bank gold bars include costs for minting, transportation, and channel profit margins, typically carrying a premium of 5 to 15 RMB/g. The tool displays raw material-level quotes, which are more suitable as a reference for bulk transactions.
Q3: Can I use this tool to calculate the buyback price of jewelry?
You can use it for a rough estimate, but jewelry recycling deducts 10% to 20% for material loss and refining fees. The actual payout will be about 80% to 90% of the total value shown here, meaning the tool's result will be on the higher side.
Q4: How do I convert this to USD gold prices?
Our tool only displays RMB quotes. If you need to convert, you can use the current exchange rate: RMB Gold Price ≈ USD Gold Price (USD/oz) × RMB Exchange Rate ÷ 31.1035. However, exchange rate fluctuations will introduce some margin of error.
Q5: Which is closer to this quote: investing in gold ETFs or physical gold?
The net asset value of gold ETFs is calculated daily based on the SGE Au99.99 closing price, making it the closest to our tool's reference price. Physical gold has higher channel premiums.
Q6: Why do silver and platinum quotes fluctuate more?
The silver and platinum markets have lower liquidity than gold and are significantly influenced by industrial demand. Intraday volatility can reach 3% to 5%. The tool's quotes only reflect the closing prices.
The results provided by this tool do not constitute investment, financial, or tax advice. Quotes are sourced from public market data and may be subject to delays or inaccuracies. Before making any actual transactions, please confirm the latest market prices through the Shanghai Gold Exchange, banks, or other authoritative platforms. For products like jewelry, gold bars, and gold coins, you must also consult the merchant's actual listed price. We are not responsible for any trading decisions made based on the use of this tool.
