For a 100,000 yuan mutual fund investment, a 1.5% annual management fee means 1,500 yuan is deducted from your returns every year. Mutual fund fees are the total expenses you pay to the fund company and custodian bank while holding the fund, including management fees, custodian fees, sales service fees, front-end loads (purchase fees), and back-end loads (redemption fees). These rates directly determine your actual return—between two funds with identical performance, the one with lower fees will yield higher final returns. Our tool allows you to look up all the fees of any public mutual fund with one click, so you can see exactly where every penny goes.
The total holding cost of a mutual fund consists of two parts:
Annualized Fixed Fees = Management Fee + Custodian Fee + Sales Service Fee (if any)
One-Time Transaction Fees = Front-End Load (upon purchase) + Back-End Load (upon redemption, usually decreasing over holding time)
If your investment principal is P, holding period is t years, annualized fixed fee rate is f (percentage), front-end load is s, and back-end load is r, the total cost is roughly:
Total Cost = P × s + P × f × t + P × r
Note: Annualized fixed fees are accrued daily from the fund's net asset value (NAV), meaning a portion of your daily return is deducted upfront. This formula ignores the compounding effect but helps you quickly estimate the true cost.
Let's take E Fund Blue Chip Selected Mixed (Fund Code: 005827) as an example. Open our mutual fund fee lookup tool:
Interpretation: Holding for 1 year, fees alone consume 3.5% of the principal. If the fund's annual return is only 5%, your actual net return is just 1.5%.
Let's look at another scenario: investing 100,000 and holding for 1 year, comparing Class A shares (005827) and Class C shares (005828) of a fund. Enter the two codes separately in the lookup tool:
Conclusion: Holding for 1 year, Class C is more cost-effective. However, if held for more than 3 years, Class A's total cost will be lower than Class C's because it lacks an ongoing sales service fee. You can use the tool to modify the holding days and observe where the breakeven point lies.
| Annualized Fixed Fee Rate | Common Types | Impact on Long-Term Returns (10 Years) |
|---|---|---|
| < 0.5% | Money Market Funds, Some ETFs | Barely affects compounding; highly recommended |
| 0.5% – 1.0% | Pure Bond Funds, Index Funds | Moderate impact; still acceptable |
| 1.0% – 1.75% | Actively Managed Equity Funds (Mainstream) | Requires excess returns to cover; choose carefully |
| > 1.75% | High-Fee Niche Funds | Generally not recommended unless performance is exceptional |
Note: Front-end loads are deducted once; the longer the holding period, the smaller the annualized impact. Back-end loads decrease with the holding period, so short-term investments require special attention.
Q: Are management and custodian fees deducted daily from returns?
A: Yes, these two fees are accrued daily and deducted directly from the fund's NAV. The daily NAV fluctuations you see are already net of fees. You won't notice any extra deductions while holding, but they silently reduce your cumulative returns.
Q: How should I choose between Class A and Class C shares?
A: It mainly depends on your holding period. Generally, choose Class C for holding periods under 1 year (no front-end load, but daily sales service fees apply); choose Class A for holding periods over 3 years (higher one-time front-end load, but no long-term service fees). You can enter different periods into our tool's comparison feature to automatically calculate the breakeven days.
Q: Why are the rates I found different from the official announcements?
A: Rates may vary based on investment size, trading channels, and promotional discounts
