When subtraction within 20 requires regrouping, the make-a-ten strategy breaks the calculation into simpler steps. For example, 13 - 6 becomes 10 - 6 = 4, then 4 + 3 = 7. This is a standard transitional strategy in first-grade math for problems where the ones digit is too small to subtract from directly. The minuend is split into 10 and its remaining ones. The subtrahend is taken away from 10 first, and that result is then added to the remaining ones. On the canvas to the right of the generator, each problem is displayed with a three-part decomposition diagram: boxes above the minuend for splitting the number and two calculation boxes below. Instead of memorizing rules, children complete the blanks to see how a number is broken apart and recombined. Because 10 is a familiar benchmark, reducing a more difficult calculation to operations involving 10 can significantly lower the cognitive load for young learners.

Main example (regular practice): Select 11–18 for “Number Range,” enter 24 under “Number of Problems,” choose two columns, and set the paper size to A4. The generated problems will appear in a 12×2 grid. For the first problem, 15 - 8, the preview card shows three fill-in steps: first, split 15 into 10 and 5; next, write 10 - 8 = 2; finally, combine the parts with 2 + 5 = 7. The blank spaces are sized for first-grade pencil writing. If a child can fill in “2” in under three seconds, subtraction from 10 is likely becoming automatic. If the child regularly gets stuck on the final addition step, more practice with addition within 10 may help; consider reducing the worksheet length in the meantime.
Comparison example (test preparation/maximum setting): Set “Number of Problems” to the maximum of 50, switch to one column, and choose A4 paper. The worksheet will extend to approximately 2.5 pages. Page breaks are inserted automatically so problems are not split across pages when printed. If “Show Answers” is enabled, answers appear directly below each problem in small, light-gray text. Note that a 50-problem, single-column layout is too dense for A5 paper. Switch to two columns or use A4 paper to preserve enough line spacing for easy marking.

A built-in shuffle algorithm selects a new set whenever you click “Generate Worksheet.” Because the pool of regrouping problems within 20 is limited, the system removes duplicates where possible and varies the order so that three consecutive worksheets created with the same settings will not be identical.

This tool is designed specifically for subtraction within 20 that requires regrouping. It does not support addition with regrouping or column subtraction within 100. All problems are generated locally in your browser and are not uploaded to a server. PDF and Word exports rely on the browser’s rendering engine, however, so print previews may show margin differences of 1–2 mm across devices, especially on mobile. Before printing for the first time, use your system’s print preview to check the crop boundaries.
The layout engine follows standard physical paper dimensions. If you select A5 in the tool but load A4 paper into the printer without enabling “Fit to Paper,” problems on the right may be cut off. The worksheet covers standard subtraction across 10 only; educators using a specialized teaching system may need to adjust the guide lines manually.
The calculation method follows the “Numbers and Operations” requirements for the first stage of primary education in the Mathematics Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education (2022 Edition), with an emphasis on visualizing each step.
