Convert length units like kilometers, meters, inches, and feet online. Supports metric, imperial, and traditional Chinese units with copyable results.
Overview
Understand what the tool solves, how it works, and the boundaries of its data.
Enter a length in kilometers, meters, decimeters, centimeters, millimeters, micrometers, nanometers, miles, yards, feet, inches, or nautical miles. The result list shows the equivalent in every supported unit at once. This is a full conversion table driven by one source value, rather than a form limited to one destination unit. Metric and commonly used U.S. customary units are grouped separately.
The calculation converts through meters: result = input × source-unit meters ÷ target-unit meters. For example, one international foot is exactly 0.3048 m and one inch is exactly 0.0254 m. A nautical mile is 1,852 m. Metric prefixes scale the meter by powers of ten. The cited NIST and BIPM references document these unit relationships; the converter itself uses the factors shown in its supported-unit list.
Guide
Follow the workflow and verify inputs and outputs with practical examples.
Type a number such as 68. The field takes one value and one unit at a time; it does not parse mixed text such as “5 ft 8 in.”
Select the unit already attached to your measurement, such as inches for 68 inches. Every displayed result is then calculated from that source.
Precision starts at four decimal places. Available settings are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10. Results are rounded for display; copying a row copies its formatted value.
Copy an individual value, or select a result row to place that displayed value and its unit back in the input. For a new conversion, using the original unrounded measurement avoids carrying display rounding into another step.
Example: 68 inches × 0.0254 m/in = 1.7272 m = 172.72 cm. At two decimal places, the table should show 172.72 cm. Converting the displayed 5.6667 ft instead may differ slightly because that feet value was rounded before the next calculation.
Use cases
See how the tool fits into real work and everyday tasks.
When a U.S. listing gives a screen or furniture dimension in inches, enter that value and compare centimeters or millimeters for a room plan or imported specification.
For a drawing that switches between feet, inches, and metric dimensions, convert each measurement from its own source unit and copy only the unit needed for your notes.
Students can compare the whole result list against a hand conversion, then adjust precision to see how display rounding changes the final digits.
Q&A
Find concise answers to common questions and confusing cases.
No. Combine the parts first: 5 ft 8 in equals 68 inches. Enter 68 and choose inches, or convert the mixed measurement to a single decimal unit yourself.
No. It lists total feet and total inches as separate results. You can divide total inches by 12 to express the whole-foot portion and remainder.
Values are rounded to the selected precision and trailing zeroes may be omitted. A result such as 2.5400 can appear as 2.54 without changing its value.
Notes
Review scope, result limitations, and important precautions before use.
Displayed precision is not a statement about how accurately the original length was measured. If an input was estimated or rounded, adding more output digits does not make that measurement more exact. This unit list does not include survey feet, light-years, or Chinese traditional units. For historical U.S. survey records, identify the foot definition in the source before comparing values; NIST notes that the U.S. survey foot was retired from new use beginning January 1, 2023.
