Coverage of CNY 10,000 per seat for driver and passengers, approximately CNY 50 per seat.
Estimation Details: Compulsory Insurance: CNY 950 (<6 seats) / CNY 1100 (>=6 seats), adjusted by NCD factor (0.7-1.3). Vehicle & Vessel Tax: tiered by displacement, NEVs exempt. Comprehensive Coverage ≈ 459 + Base Price × 1.09%. TPL & Driver/Passenger Liability: estimated by selected levels. Total commercial insurance multiplied by NCD factor. Results are market reference; actual premiums subject to insurer quotes.

You just bought a new car, or your auto insurance is about to expire and you want to switch providers. The first thing you want to know is: roughly how much will it cost this year? Our car insurance calculator can help you get a quick estimate. Here are a few real-world scenarios:
Auto Insurance Premium = Mandatory Liability Insurance (CTPL) + Commercial Insurance. CTPL is uniformly priced by the state (950 RMB for the first year for a private family car with under 6 seats), and fluctuates based on claim history: a 10% to 30% discount for consecutive claim-free years, and an increase for claims. Commercial insurance includes vehicle damage insurance, third-party liability insurance, passenger liability insurance, etc. Rates depend on vehicle value, coverage limits, usage type, and driver factors. Our calculator's commercial insurance algorithm references the rate table from the "Motor Vehicle Commercial Insurance Demonstration Clauses" issued by the Insurance Association of China, using the following simplified formula:
Commercial Insurance Premium ≈ Vehicle Damage Premium + Third-Party Liability Premium + Additional Coverage Premium
Where:
Vehicle Damage Premium = New car purchase price × Base rate (approx. 0.8% - 1.2% depending on the model)
Third-Party Liability Premium = Base premium for a fixed coverage limit (e.g., approx. 1,500 RMB for 1 million RMB coverage) × NCD (No-Claim Discount) factor
The NCD factor is based on the previous year's claims: 0 claims → 0.7, 1 claim → 1.0, 2 claims → 1.25, 3 or more claims → 1.5
Note: This is a simplified model. Actual quotes from insurance companies are also affected by channel discounts, region, driver age, and other factors. Our results are for general reference only.
Let's look at a specific example. Suppose Tom, 30, buys a new Toyota Camry for 180,000 RMB (invoice price). It's a 5-seat family car, and this is his first time insuring it (0 claims in the previous year). He wants to know the approximate cost of CTPL + Vehicle Damage + Third-Party Liability (1 million RMB coverage).
In our calculator, you simply enter 180000 in the "New Car Purchase Price" box, select 5 for "Seats", 0 for "Claims", and 1 Million for "Third-Party Coverage". Click calculate, and the "Total Annual Premium" on the right will show approximately 4,211 RMB. It will also break down the costs for mandatory and commercial insurance.
The calculator provides a reference range (a ±10% deviation is normal) because actual policies are influenced by insurance company promotions, agency rebates, and the driver's age and gender. You can judge the results as follows:
Additionally, our calculator does not factor in specific discount coefficients offered by different insurers (e.g., telemarketing discounts, renewal bonuses). If you have a specific discount rate (like 15% off), you can calculate the base premium first and apply the discount manually.
Q1: Why is my actual insurance cheaper than the calculator's estimate?
A: To attract customers, many insurance companies offer a 15% to 25% discount on commercial insurance or provide cash back through telemarketing channels. Our calculator uses standard rates and does not include channel discounts.
Q2: Can new energy vehicles (NEVs) and fuel cars use the same calculator?
A: Currently, our calculator is designed for fuel cars. Because NEVs have different battery risks, their vehicle damage rates may be higher (about 10% to 20% more). We recommend using an NEV-specific calculator or consulting customer service.
Q3: How is the "Vehicle Damage" coverage limit determined in the calculator?
A: It should be filled in based on the new car purchase price (including VAT). From the second year onwards, the coverage limit will depreciate (e.g., 0.6% depreciation per month), and you can enter the current depreciated value of the vehicle.
Q4: What is the premium difference between 2 and 3 claims?
A: Taking third-party liability as an example, the NCD factor for 2 claims is 1.25, and for 3 claims it's 1.5. Assuming a base premium of 1,480 RMB, the difference is 1,480 × (1.5 - 1.25) = 370 RMB. Factoring in changes to the vehicle damage coefficient, the total premium difference could be 600 to 1,000 RMB.
Q5: Can I just buy mandatory liability insurance (CTPL)?
A: It is legally permissible, but the maximum payout for CTPL is only 200,000 RMB (180,000 for death/disability + 18,000 for medical + 2,000 for property). This is severely insufficient in the event of a major accident. Our calculator provides a comparison between "CTPL Only" and "CTPL + Commercial" to help you see the coverage gap.
Q6: Should I buy 500,000 or 1,000,000 RMB in third-party liability coverage?
A: According to statistics, the average personal injury compensation in tier-1 cities exceeds 1 million RMB, so starting at 1 million is recommended. Our calculator allows you to switch between coverage limits to see the premium difference: 500k is about 1,300 RMB, and 1M is about 1,500 RMB. For just 200 RMB more, your coverage doubles, making it highly cost-effective.
