Enter a surname and birth time to create a comparable set of Chinese name ideas
Enter the surname “Lin,” select the exact birth date and time, then choose “Two-Character Name” and “Wisdom & Learning.” The results first show the Year, Month, Day, and Hour Pillars, followed by a simplified count of the five elements—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water—and up to several name ideas with tone-marked pinyin, each character’s element classification, and a brief meaning. Use these results to build an initial shortlist, then review each name with your family for pronunciation, meaning, and ease of writing. The tool does not predict a child’s future, personality, health, or academic performance.
Three naming styles are available: “Gender-Neutral / Any,” “Boy-Leaning,” and “Girl-Leaning.” You can choose a one- or two-character given name and select a desired theme: Wisdom & Learning, Kindness & Character, Ambition & Vision, Peace & Composure, or Resilience & Growth. The same inputs always produce the same results, so selecting “Show More Names” will not generate a random set. To explore other options, change the meaning theme, name length, or style and generate again.
The tool converts the selected Gregorian date and time into the traditional Chinese Four Pillars: Year, Month, Day, and Hour, represented by eight Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch characters. The five-element summary counts only the primary qi of each of the four Stems and four Branches: Jia and Yi, plus Yin and Mao, are classified as Wood; Bing and Ding, plus Si and Wu, as Fire; Wu and Ji, plus Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei, as Earth; Geng and Xin, plus Shen and You, as Metal; and Ren and Gui, plus Hai and Zi, as Water. After all eight characters are counted, the two elements with the lowest totals are labeled “Relatively Low.”
This is a simplified method designed for easy comparison. It does not account for hidden Heavenly Stems, seasonal strength, solar-term weighting, yin-yang balance, interactions between the Pillars, or the traditional concept of favorable elements. “Relatively Low” describes only the counts used on this page; it does not mean that a supposedly missing element must be added to a name. Different schools of Chinese metaphysics may also classify elemental strength and Chinese characters differently.
The tool first selects a character associated with one of the elements marked “Relatively Low,” then pairs it with a thematic character based on your chosen meaning. For a one-character given name, only the first character is used. For a two-character name, two different characters are combined. Suggestions also reflect the selected Gender-Neutral, Boy-Leaning, or Girl-Leaning style and exclude obvious character repetition within the full name. Up to 12 unique names are shown, with Mandarin pinyin and tone marks.
The five-element labels reflect common folk naming traditions, not a universal linguistic or naming standard. Character descriptions are brief naming associations, not quotations from classical texts or definitive interpretations. The tool does not use Kangxi stroke counts, Three Talents and Five Grids, name scores, Chinese zodiac compatibility, or auspicious-number analysis. When you find a name you like, verify it in real-world language and cultural contexts.
Comparison 1: Keep the birth details unchanged and switch the meaning theme. For example, keep the surname, birth time, and two-character name setting the same, then compare “Wisdom & Learning” with “Peace & Composure.” The Four Pillars and five-element counts remain unchanged, but the thematic characters used in the suggestions will differ. This can help your family decide whether you prefer traditional cultural associations or a particular meaning and tone.
Comparison 2: Compare one- and two-character given names. A one-character name often sounds more direct with the surname but may be more likely to match other people’s names. A two-character name offers more ways to balance sound, meaning, and visual form, but the combination should be checked for unintended interpretations. After reviewing the pinyin, say the full name aloud three times, then test it for homophones in both Mandarin and the dialects your family commonly speaks.
If the possible birth times fall on different traditional two-hour boundaries, the Hour Pillar may change, along with the simplified counts and suggested characters. Instead of repeatedly comparing results based on an uncertain time, confirm the birth record where possible. If confirmation is not possible, treat results from each plausible time as sources of name ideas—not as competing conclusions from which one must be chosen as “best.”
Can I generate names if I do not know the exact birth time?
A specific time is required to calculate all Four Pillars. If you know only a time range, you can try each plausible traditional birth hour and keep suggestions that appear across the results. However, mark these results as uncertain and do not treat them as definitive.
Does “Relatively Low” mean the BaZi chart is missing an element?
No. It only ranks the primary-element counts of the eight Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch characters. It does not calculate elemental strength, hidden Stems, or seasonal influences. The tool deliberately uses “Relatively Low” instead of “Missing” or “Favorable Element” to avoid presenting a simplified count as a complete metaphysical analysis.
Why are there no name scores or Three Talents and Five Grids analysis?
These systems use inconsistent stroke-counting methods, rules, and interpretations, and their scores can create a misleading sense of certainty. This page focuses on information you can review directly: the Four Pillars, simplified element counts, pronunciation, and character meanings.
Are suggested names saved on a server?
Name generation takes place in your browser. Your surname, birth time, and suggested names are not submitted to the backend as part of the naming request. If you use a shareable link, remember that its parameters may contain information you chose to share. Do not publicly post links containing sensitive birth details.
Can I register a suggested name as-is?
The suggestions are intended for inspiration only. Before official use, confirm approved character requirements, local registration rules, family traditions, dialect homophones, and the preferences of the child’s legal guardians.
The Four Pillars of BaZi and five-element classifications of Chinese characters come from traditional culture and folk interpretation. They are not scientifically validated models for predicting personality or life outcomes. This page does not assess fate or claim that a name can improve health, wealth, academic performance, or family relationships.
