Analyze Roblox Luau snippets in the official Luau Playground and review type diagnostics and editor hints.
The analyzer is hosted by play.luau.org and processes code in that page's browser runtime. This page does not put your code in the URL. Do not paste confidential source into a third-party page. For Roblox Studio projects, review diagnostics against the project's actual type definitions and settings.
Overview
Understand what the tool solves, how it works, and the boundaries of its data.
Luau static analysis inspects source without running a game. It can surface type mismatches, possible nil-related issues, and diagnostics recognized by the analyzer. This page embeds the official Luau Playground, so analysis comes from that online environment. It targets Luau and its toolchain; it is not a general checker for standard Lua, LuaJIT, or scripts hosted by other runtimes.
Roblox projects commonly use Luau annotations, built-in types, and platform APIs. An online check is useful for a standalone snippet, a lesson, or a small reproduction. Full project results also depend on modules, declarations, strict-mode settings, and Roblox API context. A clean result means the analyzer reported no matching issue in the current context; it does not prove that the game behaves correctly.
Guide
Follow the workflow and verify inputs and outputs with practical examples.
Enter or paste Luau source in the embedded editor. Start with a short, self-contained example so each diagnostic can be traced to a declaration or expression.
Review syntax, type, and lint hints shown by the editor. Move to the reported location and inspect the related declaration, assignment, and return type to understand the cause.
When checking type behavior, add explicit annotations and use syntax supported by Luau. To compare strict-mode behavior, apply the same mode in the target script and check it again there.
After resolving a warning, return to Roblox Studio and analyze and run the code in the real project. Module imports, instance hierarchy, services, and project-specific declarations may not exist in the standalone Playground context.
Use cases
See how the tool fits into real work and everyday tasks.
While learning Luau's type system, use the Playground to try optional and union types, table shapes, and function signatures, then observe how the analyzer reasons about assignments and calls. This is quicker than setting up a full project for one language question and makes a short reproduction easy to share.
For Roblox maintenance, paste logic that does not depend on project modules to get an initial view of a type warning or syntax issue. This works well for quick triage and teaching. If the source relies on project modules, plugin APIs, or custom declarations, use Roblox Studio and the project's own configuration for the final diagnosis.
Q&A
Find concise answers to common questions and confusing cases.
It is not a general-purpose checker. The embedded official Playground targets Luau, whose type analysis and language extensions differ from standard Lua and LuaJIT. Choose a parser or analyzer that matches the runtime for a regular Lua project.
No. Static analysis does not fully simulate gameplay, network state, instance lifetimes, or every API behavior. Put the code back into its project, review diagnostics in Studio, and run the relevant scenarios.
The standalone Playground does not automatically load local modules, project declarations, or script settings. Missing declarations or a different strict-mode setting can change results. Use a self-contained reproduction and treat project analysis as authoritative.
Notes
Review scope, result limitations, and important precautions before use.
This page embeds the official Luau Playground, whose editor is hosted by play.luau.org and runs its analyzer in that page's browser context. This site does not put source code in the iframe URL. The third-party page has its own data practices and network requests, so follow your organization's source-handling rules before pasting code. Do not enter secrets, credentials, unpublished commercial source, or personal data.
Luau type checking complements an IDE workflow by making standalone snippets easy to share and experiment with. It does not replace Roblox Studio, project declarations, or team CI checks. The official environment may change over time; if its result differs from a project, save a minimal reproduction and recheck it with the matching Studio version.
