When the electrician asks during renovation, "How high should I leave the outlet for the TV?" and you don't know what to answer? This calculator is designed to solve exactly that: input your TV size, estimated viewing distance, and seated eye level, and it tells you directly how high to position the TV center and bottom edge for maximum comfort.
The human eye's most natural viewing range is within 15 degrees above and below horizontal. When watching TV, directing your gaze slightly downward (5–10 degrees) reduces neck strain. The calculator's core approach is: first calculate screen height from TV size, then combine it with viewing distance and recommended downward viewing angle to determine the ideal TV center height from the floor.

Main Example: Xiaoming's living room is 4 meters wide, with the sofa against the wall and about 3.5 meters from the TV wall. He plans to buy a 75-inch TV. His seated eye height measures 115 cm.
Comparison Example (Small TV, Close Distance): A 43-inch TV in a bedroom, 2 meters viewing distance, bed height 45 cm, seated eye height approximately 95 cm when reclining halfway. Calculation: Center Height C = 95 − 200 × tan(8°) ≈ 95 − 28.1 = 66.9 cm. Bottom Edge Height ≈ 66.9 − 53.7/2 ≈ 40 cm. If the bottom edge is 40 cm from the floor, you'll need a low TV stand or mount the TV higher. You'll notice that in a bedroom, the recommended center height is noticeably lower than in the living room, matching the habit of viewing while half-reclined.

The "Bottom Edge Height" provided by the calculator determines the TV stand or outlet height: outlets are best hidden behind the TV, with about 10 cm of clearance space above the bottom edge height. If the bottom edge height is 19 cm, the TV stand should not exceed 15 cm in height, or it will obstruct the screen.
This calculator is based on the common 16:9 screen ratio. If using 21:9 or 4:3 ratios, actual heights will differ; recalculate based on the screen's actual height. The calculation provides visual comfort guidance only and does not include safety installation instructions. Before wall-mounting, confirm the wall's load-bearing capacity (different anchors are needed for brick, concrete, and drywall), and plan the outlet and signal cable positions to avoid rework after installation. For children's rooms, consider mounting the TV higher to prevent collisions, though visual comfort will decrease—balance is needed.
Q: Is there a universal standard for TV installation height?
There is no mandatory standard, but the industry recommends eye level aligned with or slightly below the TV center. SMPTE recommends a viewing angle of no more than 15° from horizontal, while THX recommends no more than 10°. Our calculator defaults to an 8° downward angle, and you can see the recommended range of 5°–10° in the results.
Q: My sofa is very high, with a seated eye height of 130 cm. How do I enter this?
Simply enter 130, and the calculator will give a higher center height. However, note that if the TV wall height is limited, the TV's top edge might approach the ceiling, requiring a smaller TV or larger downward angle.
Q: If the TV needs tilted installation, is the calculator still accurate?
Tilted installation can compensate for height errors, but excessive tilt affects viewing angle and reflections. Recommend calculating for level mounting first; if tilting is necessary, reduce the downward angle by half (e.g., change from 8° to 4°), then tilt the TV upward by 4°.
Q: Can this tool be used for projection screens?
The basic principles are the same, but projection screens have different sizes and ratios than TVs, and require space for heat dissipation. Consider using a screen-specific calculator or manually adjusting the screen height when using this tool.
Q: After wall-mounting, I find the height isn't comfortable. What can I do?
If the wall holes are already drilled, consider replacing the bracket with an adjustable or tiltable one. If the bracket is fixed, you can only adjust your sitting posture (add cushions) or move the sofa to fine-tune viewing height. Next time, always calculate first and drill after.
