Powered by the VSOP87 astronomical algorithm, this tool returns the exact moon phase (e.g., New Moon, First Quarter), corresponding icons, lunar date, solar terms, and moon age data when you enter a Gregorian date. The moon phase refers to the visible shape of the sunlit portion of the moon, with a cycle of 29.53 days (a synodic month).
What is the date range for the moon phase calculator?
It supports dates from January 1, 1900, to December 31, 2100. Entering a date outside this range will prompt an error.
Why do the solar term time and moon phase icon for the same day seem inconsistent?
Solar term times are accurate to the minute, but the tool assigns the solar term to the entire day it occurs. Meanwhile, the moon phase icon represents the primary moon phase status for that day. Actual observations may vary slightly depending on your geographical location.
Please enter dates using the standard Gregorian format; vague terms like "tomorrow" are not accepted. The moon age value reflects the number of days since the last New Moon, with a Full Moon occurring around 14.77 days. Solar term information indicates the solar term for that specific day; refer to the details for the exact time.
For astronomical observers, we recommend planning your observations using moon age data: a moon age of 3-7 days is ideal for observing lunar surface details (the terminator line is distinct), while 12-16 days is perfect for photographing a Full Moon. Typical example: Entering 2024-06-10 will display the moon phase 🌓 First Quarter, the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, the Mangzhong (Grain in Ear) solar term, and a moon age of 7.2 days.
