Whether your math teacher asks you to write 18/24 in its simplest form, you need to scale down a cake recipe with a 28/42 ratio, or you're calculating floor tile usage for a renovation and want to reduce a fraction like 64/120 to check the proportions—our fraction simplifier comes in handy for all these situations. Just enter the top number in the numerator box and the bottom number in the denominator box, click the "Simplify" button, and get the result and step-by-step process instantly.
Simplifying a fraction (or reducing a fraction) means converting it into an equivalent fraction where the numerator and denominator are coprime (their greatest common divisor is 1). For example, with 12/16, you divide both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor, 4, to get 3/4. The core logic of this calculator is to first find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of the numerator and denominator, and then divide both by that number. This entire process follows the standard mathematical principle of dividing by a common factor.
You have the fraction 18/24 and want to reduce it to its simplest form. Enter 18 as the numerator and 24 as the denominator in the calculator, then click "Simplify".
Comparison Example: When the numerator and denominator are already coprime. Take the fraction 7/11. Enter 7 for the numerator and 11 for the denominator, then click simplify. The greatest common divisor is 1, and the result remains 7/11. The calculator will prompt "This fraction is already in its simplest form." This indicates that there are no common factors to reduce, so you don't need to worry about making a mistake.
1. Why is the result still an improper fraction (e.g., 6/5) after simplifying?
Simplifying only reduces the proportional relationship between the numerator and denominator; it does not convert improper fractions into mixed numbers. If the resulting numerator is larger than the denominator, it remains an improper fraction. You can manually convert it to a mixed number (1 1/5) or leave it as is.
2. What if my fraction has a negative sign?
You can enter a negative numerator or a negative denominator. The calculator will automatically handle the signs, and the final positive or negative sign will be placed in front of the numerator (e.g., -2/3). Note that the numerator and denominator cannot both be negative, as two negatives make a positive, resulting in a positive fraction.
3. How is the greatest common divisor calculated?
Our calculator uses the Euclidean algorithm, which can quickly calculate the GCD even for large numbers with thousands of digits. The process is displayed in the results area.
4. Can fractions be simplified into decimals?
No. This tool is strictly for fraction simplification and does not perform decimal conversions. If you need to convert a fraction to a decimal, you can use the "Fraction to Decimal Calculator" on our website.
5. Can I enter very large integers (like 99999999/100000000)?
Yes, as long as they are within the JavaScript safe integer range (approximately ±2^53), they can be calculated accurately. If they exceed this range, it will prompt "Number too large," and we recommend simplifying in steps.
6. Can it display mixed numbers along with the simplified fraction?
The current version only displays the simplest proper/improper fraction and does not include mixed number formats. You can divide the numerator by the denominator to get the whole number part, using the remainder as the new numerator.
