The key measurements of a cylinder are calculated using these two basic dimensions:
π (Pi) is approximately 3.1415926535. We use a high-precision value in our calculator.
To calculate a different set of dimensions, simply update the input fields and click calculate again.
Example: A cylindrical water bucket with a base radius of 20 cm and a height of 50 cm.
Interpreting the Results: The bucket can hold 62.832 liters of water (since 1 liter = 1000 cm³). If you were to paint it, the surface area is about 0.88 square meters. Assuming one liter of paint covers about 10 square meters, you would need less than 0.1 liters of paint for this bucket.
Volume is the amount of space inside the cylinder. For example, a cylinder with a 1-meter radius and 1-meter height has a volume of about 3.14 cubic meters, which can hold 3.14 metric tons of water (water density is 1 ton/m³).
Total Surface Area is the sum of all external areas of the cylinder. Look at this value when wrapping the cylinder with materials (like paper, paint, or fabric).
Base Area and Lateral Area can be used individually: for instance, if you are only applying a sticker to the side of the cylinder, you only need the lateral area.
Note: The calculated results default to the same units as your inputs. If you use cm for both radius and height, the area will be in cm² and the volume in cm³. You can manually convert these to square meters, cubic meters, or liters as needed.

1. I measured the diameter. How do I enter it?
Divide the diameter by 2 to get the radius, and enter that result into the radius field.
2. Can I use meters as the unit?
Yes. For example, if the radius is 0.2 m and the height is 0.5 m, the resulting area will be in m² and the volume in m³. Conversion tip: 1 m³ = 1000 liters.
3. Why is my result slightly different from my manual calculation?
This is due to the precision of π. We use 3.1415926535, whereas manual calculations often use 3.14, leading to a slight variance. This won't affect everyday use.
4. Can this calculator compute hollow cylinders?
No. This tool only calculates solid cylinders. Hollow cylinders (like pipes) require both an outer and inner radius, which is a different type of calculation.
5. Does the surface area include the lid?
Yes, it includes both the top and bottom bases. If you only want to calculate the lateral area plus one base (e.g., an open-top bucket), you can manually add the lateral area and one base area.
6. What happens if I enter a negative number?
The result will be negative, which has no physical meaning. The tool won't stop you from entering it, but please ensure both the radius and height are positive numbers.
